Just for the hell of it I thought I'd try some veggies I've never head of this year and ordered the seeds by post from Chiltern Seeds. Unfortunately the packets are masterpieces of minimalism with no instructions at all.

Can anyone tell me the earliest and latest dates for sowing amaranth, land cress, mizuna and salsify? Ta.

I'll be having a go at growing scorzonera (black salsify) this year and I'll just be planting it in April along with the carrots and parsnips once the soil warms up a bit.

My land-cress went in yesterday.  You need to successionally sow, as it can bolt (it generally takes about 2 months to mature, and will stand for a month unless the weather is very uncooperative, so I tend to sow every three-four weeks); it's less likely to bolt in the autumn and will stand over winter, but it makes finer leaves with a cloche.  It likes damp soil, though not as wet as watercress!

Not sure about the others, I'm afraid.

Planting amaranth is easy. After danger of frost is past, the seed can either be broadcast and raked into the soil or sown in narrow, shallow rows.
Seeds of change.

Sowing and planting: Mizuna is a serrated leaf with a refreshing kick, while mibuna is smoother and has a slightly milder, mustardy bite. To grow as single plants sow in situ 10-35cm apart. For your maincrop of whole plants sow successionally from early to late summer. For a winter/spring crop sow in late summer/early autumn. If grown as cut-and-come-again seedlings broadcast or sow in drills about 10cm apart. For summer/autumn crop sow successionally outside in early spring as soon as the soil is workable

Thanks for the info mumofstig, Stripey_cat and gregmcalister. Think I'll get the land cress in the ground this weekend if the weather holds.

I did my scorzonera about 10 days ago in a barrel in the plastic greenhouse. When the weather warms up, I'll move it outside - the sowing instructions say April to May outside.

I would hang on to some of the land cress seed for a aug/sept sowing which should give you something to go at all winter. It won't go to seed then til April  then you can let one plant self seed and you won't need to buy seed again.

Hope you like it - a bit hot for some but makes a wonderful winter salad with beetroot!!
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

I grew salsify last year. Just sowed direct in april. I'm still trying to get it out! Won't bother this year. Some of the roots were two spits deep and most of them got snapped off when trying to get them out. I'm wondering if all these half roots will regrow.
