I grow fenugreek as a green manure. It likes warm soil, grows about 2ft high and has small white flowers. Its roots fix nitrogen from the air which is used by the following crop.

How do you use it as a herby thing?

I looked up and c&p'd a lot of info on green manures some time ago. This is what I have on Fenugreek:-

Half hardy annual
Sow march to august
Lasts 1-3 months
Fenugreek is a legume. This means that it should be treated as peas in your rotation. However, it is unlikely to fix nitrogen, as it requires an unusual strain of bacteria to be able to do so. It will produce a large bulk of material very quickly. It does best on soils which are well-drained without being too dry.

White flowers. Attractive foliage plant.
ROOTS Average
NITROGEN FIXER Not in UK
GROWTH Rapid
FOLIAGE Bushy, good cover
DURATION Quick starting 2-3 months
SOIL Heavy to light but prefers good drainage
SOW RATE 250gms/55sq m, 20kg per acre
TURNING IN Before flowering

I've not heard of it as a salad item, but do know of it in cooking. When I was living in the middle east, you could buy 'greens' either for cooking or for eating raw. Neither fenugreek nor leaf coriander were ever included in the salad mix, but were in the cooking mix.

I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

Wonderfull, I want it for cooking with and if posible to dry some of the seeds for using in curries. Finding it in France is very near impossible.  :)

You can grow seed on paper like mustard and cress, if you want leaves for curries in the winter.  It does like a warm climate, so I'm not sure that it'll ripen seed (probably depends on where you are in France!).  Is there anyone you know who can come out to visit you with a kilo bag from an Indian grocer?

You can use it instead of spinach in indian food (or anything else if you like the taste, which is quite unique) Need quite a lot in it other wise there is not enough flavour.

I shall certainly try cooking some this Summer. I got my seeds from the Organic Gardening catalogue

Nah, nah.  I meant is there anyone in England who'll be coming over to visit you, who can stock you up in exchange for local produce or such (easier with a car, but a kilo outbound is quite possible flying)?  I have a friend in Geneva and we do this (both directions) whenever she or her father are in England.

Re: Growing Fenugreek. -- how about coriander?
boyfriend (who's in charge of cooking rather than growing usually!) has just sown and grown fenugreek from culinary seeds! which I was surprised at as I assumed that culinary seeds were heat treated or some such... have other people have success growing other herbs and spices from culinary seeds?

he wants to grow coriander - any tips? I was thinking of trying to start them off on damp kitchen paper (aka polyroll in our household, although no one else seems to call it that!)

Coriander seed grows well enough-- no need to pregerminate it, just plant it about half centimetre down in a warm sunny spot. Mine is in a morrisons pot, daughter's in a window box in a cold greenhouse, or wait until it is warm at night and up it'll come  :D :D

Fenugreek as a green manure does not usually fix nitrogen in our cool UK climate. Its growth soon slows down in the Autumn and it is killed by frost so it is a Summer green manure.
