Beginners Question
« on: March 13, 2009, 18:26 »
Hi all

I planted some onion seeds a couple of weeks ago and I'm pleased to say that most of them have come up!  As I dont have a green house, I've put them in trays on my Utility room window but they seem to be getting a bit leggy already (if an onion can get leggy!!) Can I put them outside now or is it too early?

Also, can I plant early peas in pots indoors now or are they best planted direct?

Thanks,

Ive got my onions in a unheated greenhouse, I checked the pack not ten minutes ago (spooky!) and you can transfer to 3" pots and then plant out next month. Mine are 'leggy' too, but Im not going to bother potting on at this late date.

Early peas are fine to be potted up indoors, or equally they can go outside, most say March.  Though Id be careful of those micies which is partly why mine are going out beg/mid april

It's very common practice here in home use and commercial greenhouses to give leggy onions an even haircut, so they've got a 2 -2-1/2" brushcut. On planting them out later, I always find that they've got very vigorous root systems.
