A few Compost questions
« on: March 12, 2009, 21:03 »
I currently have my black plastic dalek type compost container wrapped up in bubble wrap, as I understand this helps contain the heat in winter. Is it adviseable to remove this now, or will leaving it on continue to help heat it up?
Also, just wondering whether coconut shell can go in the heap, as I have a few at the moment, as I've been gobbling up coconuts while they've been cheap recently.
Cheers
Steve

Cant see any problem with leaving the bubble wrap on another couple of weeks or so, its not Spring yet  >:(

Wouldnt coconut shell take forever to break down properly?

I agree with Peapod ,thats some hard stuff  coconut shell.

You say coconuts are cheap at the moment banf how much are they now to what they used to be?

I feel i should be eating a coconut now.

You could take the bubble wrap off and turn the heap to stir it all up. That will get it going. Just pull the whole thing off and then shovel everything back in again.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

First of all, I like the idea of a Tequila, but I've never liked fresh coconut.  The shell would be the same as normal nuts, they wouldn't compost at all.  If you had loads of them and you smash them to bits, you can lie them down and create a path out of them.  But I don't bother with bubble wrap.  Stuff in the compost heats itself up.  Plastic creates its own heat anyway
