Growing stuff for the girls to eat.
« on: March 11, 2009, 16:29 »
Id like to give the girls a little more green material than they're getting at the moment, seems like the time to put some seeds in.  Ideally fast growing for a north facing slope with poor sandy soil.

My attempts to grow comfrey and rhubarb up there last year seem to have failed.

Ideal ?

...  spinach, cabbages , marrows , chard
All being grown but I very much doubt if any will get to the girls  :)

I tried them with  courgettes last year - they wouldn't eat them  :(

Field beans are great the girls eat the pods and leaves the beans get dried then fed during the winter, runner beans are very good  but to be fair around 1/3 of all my crops off the lotti are fed to my chucks i've yet to find something they wont eat. I also try to feed some form of greens each day approx 2 to 3 hours B4 dark. IMHO the more greens i can give them the fitter and more active my girls are and the better egg production is

I did try to grow parsley in pots for them as they decimated when they got loose on the veg patch - but they totally ignored it when presented to them nicely

Ours love lettuce, and the rate they grow and the amount of seeds you get in a packet is worth a go.

Don't give them rhubarb leaves with the rest of their greens, it's toxic but they can use it to self medicate if they have worms. (No kidding!)

Meterman, thanks for the info on field beans.
Legumes are high protein so I want to grow alfalfa if it will grow here as tje first fat shoots in spring are yummy as well as being excellent for protein. If it doesn't grow well I will try them on field beans. :)
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
