Carrot fly? Do 2 ft barriers really work?
« on: March 10, 2009, 12:25 »
Carrot fly? Do 2 ft barriers really work or do I need to continue with total mesh cover? Any clever designs or different materials for barriers?

Total mesh cover the only sure way.  Where the story of 'em only flying 2' has come from I don't know but a lot of experts ore now doubting it

I planteg early nantes II and autumn king in 3' high barrels for the first time last year. There wasn't a mark on them. In previous years I grew them in the ground and they were riddled by flt? luck perhaps?

I got hold of an old bath to try carrots in this year (for the height and cos I can't grow them in my clay soil!!!)

Can I drape some fine net curtain over the top of the bath - supported by some canes so as not to crush the leaves - for extra protection?

No. I tried growing mine in baths sat on pallets and they still got em, and yes I blocked the plug hole and overflow. As Celtic says, cover them.

Hi,

I planted carrots in my raised flower beds last year amongst other plants and they were great.  I also grew some in the ground but the raised bed ones were much better, no carrot fly at all :)

I've heard onions can keep them away... Then again I've heard they don't  Usual gardeners reply I suppose.

Incidently here is a useful Carrot website, I've forgotten who I got the link from but it was from someone on this site (richyrich7 )
