Drake prolapse...
« on: March 09, 2009, 18:54 »
One for Kate and Vember -one of my boys has a prolapse, darn!!!! Am going to try and pop in back in with some Prep H, and antibiotic cream, but think I might have to amputate as it looks a bit dry although not infected.

Has anyone experience of this??? Poor lad I think has been overdoing it.... :(

No personal experience I'm afraid :(

Storey's guide says :

The organ should be washed with warm clean water & then disinfected & treated with medicated ointment. You can try pushing the penis back into place, but - as often as not - it will pop back out in a short time.
Apply ointment daily until he is fully recovered, which may require several weeks or longer.
Drakes should not be allowed to mate for at least 3 months.
Often the end of the penis dries up & falls off. Because the semen exits from the base & travels down a groove that spirals around the penis, a drake can still be fertile even if a proportion of the penis sloughs off (although fertility usually does not return for 6 - 12 months).

Fingers crossed for him :)

thanks guys!  I have managed to get it all back in (about 3 inches of it)-it was constricted around the opening which may be why the little fella couldn't retract. I have cleaned and popped on some cream as well as prep H to help any inflammation. Given him some anti biotics and will hope for the best. I really dont like the idea of amputating it, poor guy.... :(

I dont think he was very happy Rob....on his back with his little webbed feet flapping, I think he thought I was murdering him! It did feel a bit surreal though....trying to calm a duck whilst gently.....

When I was 14 my horse got an infection on his sheath. The only thing to do was tickle him whilst wearing rubber gloves and then 'grab it' and put the cream on.  I have never had to do anything so embarrassing again since!

Good luck!

Nothing to add over Vember and I would have just been quoting Storey's  :D
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Maybe it was a bit inflammed, will keep it clean and try again tommorrow. At least with antibiotics I can reduce the risk of infection. It is quite a bad prolapse, but if it needs to come of to save him thats what I will do. Will keep you posted, must admit this is all very new to me!
