I was just planning on putting me firsts, seconds and mains in at same time is that best?
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

ours will go in in 2 weeks time but only because we both have a week of work so its easier for us to do it then, we did them 2 years ago while it was snowing and still have a good crop!

Hi all,

Mine are currently sat on the kitchen windowsill, chitting.

The aim for me was to get them all in during the first two weeks of April.

Not many for me though, 12 of each, 1st earlies pentland javelin & mains of vale's everest and lady balfour.

First time growing spuds proper for me, so a step into the unknown.

If you want proper earlies, that is ones to lift in the first 2 weeks in June, they have to be in the ground within the next week or so.

I am thinking a couple of weeks yet for the earlies, because it is still cold and wet and that part of the plot is still not getting much sun.  Mains mid-April I think, although I hope April is warmer than last year.

How do you cope with keeping them frost-free apart from plenty of earthing -up?

Learner, my guess would be that until they gain foliage & shove their heads up, they're cosy enough in their trenches below ground.
After they DO sprout, the exposed plants/foliage are as susceptible to frost as everything else and need fleecing/earthing up/mollycoddling until all danger is passed  :)
This doesn't apply to growing in buckets/bags etc - the smaller volume of growing medium could well render these lot stricken by frost even before foliage appears, which is why I suggest starting off in g/house, and as a precaution wrapping in bubblewrap  ;)

Keep earthing them up until you run out of earth. Rows wider than the recommended 24 inches helps with this. After that keep an eye on the weather forecast and have fleece ready. You can rise early and water the frost off before the sun comes up. That was the old way before fleece.

Still to frosty here - tradition says Good Friday - but can't do that, OH 50th so off to Seaside to celerbrate!!!!!  Will be putting them in the weekend before.

This bit about Good Friday - bit odd - Good Friday moves every year - so when should you plant, a Good Friday in March or a Good Friday in April
