Parsnips, plant now?
« on: March 06, 2009, 18:48 »
Hello all.
I am thinking of planting parsnip seeds this weekend.  Ground is prepared and has been covered by cloches for the last 3 weeks, Am I O.K or should I give it another week or two?

Kep the faith.

Rictic.

I'm with you rictic,

White Gems for me this year. The packet says plant in march so another week and they go in, whatever the weather :tongue2:

Im with Peapod mid to end april straight in.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Rictic, if you update your profile to put your location in it, we'll be able to advise you better.  Cornwall has very a different climate from, say, Teeside.

I agree with Peapod & MW if you're as far north as we are.

The packets do often say Feb - Mar planting dates, but parsnips are very poor germinators at times and cold wet soil will do nothing to encourage them.  Even John in his book suggests delaying a bit.  The plants do catch up.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Have planted some last month in a very large pot. They were pre soaked in warm water and planted when there was signs of sprouting. Now about an inch tall and covered with a large clear plastic bag. It worked last year but it was much warmer!!
