Paper Pots
« on: March 05, 2009, 11:29 »
I've used my version of Richy's paper pots for some time. I use a short length of plastic bath waste pipe to wrap the newspaper round, leaving about 1" sticking out.  This is then tucked inside the pipe and squashed flat from the other end with a short length of  broom shank. My problem has always been filling the pots with compost without getting most on the bench or floor.  I've tried making paper and card funnels without much success but last weekend in a local hardware shop I found  the solution - a jam funnel.  Fits inside the pots perfectly, a handful of compost firmed gently with the bit of broom shank, and on to the next.  No spillageat all and so quick to fill up a tray full of pots. Perfect. God bless the WI.

Thanks Vodapete - I adapted this by using the funnel for dispensing salt into our dishwasher - it's the perfect diameter :)

I use the top cut off a 2 litre milk container, it then has a built in handle to shake it with.

I use a potting tray - so all the compost that misses the pots can just be piled up and used for the next batch. Have to say I find it invaluable for keeping the working area reasonably free from spillages

Yeah, sorry about that. I reckon it will last a lifetime though ... and a 3-ply one would je just as good, now I come to think of it ...

So that's what it's used for.   ::)Found one in a shed the other day and had no idea what it was used for.  The nearest I got was as a cat litter tray for an elderly cat that couldn't step very high.
Cheese makes everything better.
