Chilli's
« on: March 03, 2009, 16:12 »
Hi

I'm planning on growing a number of chilli's this year, providing the seeds germinate.

I was wondering if anyone has ideas on how big they may grow ? As I got the seeds cheap and no reference to height.

They are the following types,

Ancho

Cayenne

Jalepeno

Habernero

Chilli W**ly

Any other info is appreciated, grew prairie fire last year and trying them again.

Many thannks. :)

Grew Cayenne last year, they got to about 3/4 ft, though I didnt pinch out the tops. I heard later I should have done to make them bush out. Im trying that with them this year
Im trying Prairie Fire too :-)

Generally you should pinch out the growing tip at around 12 - 18" to allow the plant to bush out.

Its was ok..enough for the OH, but not to my mind for the amount of room they took up in the lean-to GH. Thats why Ive gone for prairie fire, more to the bush! OH liked cayenne though, so Ive overwintered 3 (but not to optimistic, its been so cold). If they dont do anything Ill sow more for his bacon butties  :D

Mine grew to about 3- 4ft aswell they were Jalapeno, and Thai red, but i got them from the garden centre. This year so far I have bought these seeds;

De Cayenne
Hot caribbean blend
Demon Red
Hot Thai....

So you can tell me and hubby love our chilli's... :D  I intend on drying some this year, so we've got plenty to keep us going...that said i haven't finished buying my seeds yet... ::) I won';t bother with the Jalapeno's this year though, I was very  disappointed with them.

Why were you dissapointed with 'em parpsnip?
I would like to try just one type and was thinking of Jalapeno. which would you suggest if not?

They hardly  had any flavour and no heat...  In our house they have to blow your head off... ::)

My favourites are the red thai chillis..I use them for all sorts of cooking... :D

Same here Snips, OH likes them hot, the cayenne went to red before they were eaten, so they were OK for him. I looked at a chili website the other day and they were classed as moderately hot. Prairie Fire are classed as 'atomic'.  I cant wait to see OH when he bites into one

I grew cayenne last year thinking to dry them to use as flakes in cooking :( Had plenty but not hot enough to dry. Just cut up and froze them and used in casseroles without adding much heat.

Can anybody recommend one for drying?
