pre chitted parsnips
« on: March 03, 2009, 14:17 »
I've prechitted on damp kitchen paper and potted them into richies paper pots, are they okay to go out into the unheated greenhouse now?

You threw me on the terminology; here we call it pre-sprouting if you start off seeds on damp paper  ;)
Frankly, it's a bit early yet to even start parsnips but as you have them, yes, you can put them in a greenhouse now but it must be frostfree. Parsnips like frost only after they've grown fully and have the root sugars to withstand frost.

I did some and it only took a coupple of days to sprout, but they where in the Airing cupboard

They are now in Richy Pots and outside, resent frost doesnt appear to have bothered them

So..if we're planning to try pre-sprouting and potting up when would be a good time to get them going.

After last year's "non-show" out on the plot I'll try almost anything.

Why have I never thought of doing that?!  I will try it this year, as I am fed up with hit and miss seeds.
Thanks guys,

My DH pre-chits his parsnips. He keeps them on damp paper and checks them every day. Any with a hint of root coming out are planted straight away in toilet roll insides filled with compost. If the root gets too long it may get damaged when handled. We are getting slight frosts just now and it does not affect them.

Don't worry. They really are slow starters and can take 3 weeks to sprout on damp paper. Make sure they're sitting in a warm area and you should see them soon.

I grew my Parsnips last year in toilet rolls, when it came to planting out I knew I had 100% germination and because I put them in neat rows I can now still find them now although the foliage has almost gone. Having said that, I will be using Richies rolls for parsnips and---Swede, because I'm fed up with thinning them out. Cheers Richie good idea.
