planting out broad beans
« on: March 02, 2009, 22:08 »
I sowed my broad beans (Masterpiece Green Longpod) on 26 Feb in paper pots which I made.  They are in a spare unheated bedroom.  One week later they peeped out of the compost and today, 8 days later, I am panicking because they are 7, 8 and 9 inches tall.  I swear they are growing an inch daily....  What to do?  Put them in my unheated little plastic greenhouse, or plant them out under fleece?

I live in SE England, about 15 miles from London

Plant them out asap. Bung a bit of fleece over if frost is forecast. They will be fine. Plant them as deep as you can.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Yes, get them out as quick as you can.... But harden them off first.

Old Bob my mate on the lotty did his two weeks ago in the greenhouse, they are just popping through now.

Dear all,

Can they be planted out in troughs? I have a small garden and have thought of doing some in troughs. I have some I usually plant tomatoes in and they are 30 X 60 CM and 26 CM deep.

If it is possible how many per trough?

Kind regards.

Peter.

Pete - try planting Sutton's  dwarf variety called "the Sutton" which grows not much more than a foot. About 9 inches apart. They need space between them so that all the flowers will be pollinated by the bees.

I did The Sutton in a trough last year.  It was OK, but did better in the ground (the roots could go further and deeper, I think).

??? They used to until I moved site, mine were 3 feet high last year. I looked I right mug when I explained I only grew them so they didn't get hit by the wind, at 3 feet high the knocked by the wind and I ended up supporting them.
