Autumn bliss when do they shoot?
« on: March 02, 2009, 20:20 »
I planted some bare root Autumn Bliss in early December - prepped the soil with blood, fish & bone, can't see any sign of buds yet. They're about a foot tall. have mulched them with well rotted manure - when should i see shoots please?

Should get a crop although if newly planted then they will also need to establish a decent root system. So I would expect them to crop better next year, and subsequent ones, when they get more established.

Equally we tend to dig the ground, add fertilisers and compost so we do give them a bit of an easy life and supply everything they need to produce a good crop early. :D :D

I planted around december or Jan as well same variety Autmn Bliss.  I have little buds all up the stem they were there when they arrived.  Do they grow from these buds up the stem or just grow new shoots from the bottom or both.  I am wondering because I was told i could grow these in pots but if they grow new shoots from the bottom I wuold have thought the pot will soon get crowded.

The buds on the cane suggest the cane didn't fruit last autumn, so you may get some very early fruit on it (but they may not ripen).

New canes will be thrown up from the base, but you cut away the old canes (they die once they've fruited) so it doesn't get too crowded.  That said, the roots try to spread sideways and shallow, so they're not ideal for long-term container growing (and they're a pain to keep watered).  If you can, I'd try to get them in the ground, but they'll be OK in a pot for a year or two with good care.

Ta

Maybe I will get a small batch of summer fruit as I have heard some Autmn Bliss's do.

May I suggest you cut down the canes to about 2 or 3 inches.......this will help them sprout from the soil, which is what you need, rather than the plant wasting energy on the small buds.  ;)

Are there better Autumn raspberries than Autumn Bliss?
