Self cleaning Potato shocker!
« on: March 01, 2009, 19:44 »
Just checked on my (chitting) spuds in shed and noticed a couple with foam bubbles coming out of them, are they a self cleaning variety or something more sinister?

Keep the faith

Rictic.

Sounds bad to me, I've never had bubbling spuds where did you get them from ??

Sounds like they're rotting from inside and need replacing. Hope you can find more quickly.

Hmmmm. I had a bag of Charlotte seed spuds from the Organic Catalogue. Nearly all of them have rotted in the shed, despite being in dry egg trays and in a frost free space. Have your spuds gone soft and mushy too?

If they've gone mushy in the shed, it probably wasn't quite as frost-free as you thought, as that sounds like frost damage to me.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I think it is some I forgot about that were left in car boot for a few days during some very cold weather.

i made that mistake last year, the frost has got them.u will have to chuck em and get some more.
i lost 3 bags last year liek that and the ones that survived tasted orrible when i harvested them.
chalk it up to experience and a lesson learned.

I'm working on the assumption that it wasn't the frost. It wasn't that bad down here in Devon. The most likely culprits are the apples that I had in storage right by the spuds. They were russets which aren't renowned for their keeping qualities. The gas that they were giving off (ethylyne?) probably hastened the rotting of the spuds.

IIRC, a couple of ripe apples or bananananas will ripen green tomatoes, so a few spuds wouldn't stand a chance... :(

I probably won't bother to be honest. I didn't have much luck growing spuds last year and we don't really eat that many anyway. They seem like a lot of work and fiddling for what you get back. They take up loads of space too. I'd rather grow more butternut squash or beans.
