Hoe or swoe
« on: February 27, 2009, 18:42 »
Thinking of buying a nice new Hoe or Swoe. Anyone use a Swoe ? and do you think it better?
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

I use a swoe all the time, Fantastic bit of kit.
I like the way you can hoe behind things without moving. :)

Looks like a draw hoe/backward hoe with a smaller blade
If it brakes get out the hammer
if that does'nt work get a bigger hammer

Anyone ever used a pikel? Its like a hoe but instead of the blade you fasten a taut piece of wire to cut through the soil. We used to use them on the farm as a lad, up in the north-west, but I have never seen one anywhere else.

I wouldn't know how to manage a hoe now that I have had a swoe all these years.

Having read about people and their swoes I decided to look for one. Prices ranged but all about £20 for a Wilkinson Sword stainless steel ---- until I dropped into my local garden centre. ::)

I found two.... both unpriced. I asked "how much" and was told £12.80 so snapped it up! :)

What a bargain :D

There's a link to a picture of a swoe somewhere in this thread...... an interesting looking bit of kit.

I am hoping it will make weeding in tight spots and places where I have to reach a long way, easier.  ;)

We'll see.

Hoe or swoe? - depends what you are using it for.

Like the above post I use a swoe for fddly bits in beds and borders and yes it's great for getting behind plants.
For larger areas between rows, non cropped areas etc a swivel hoe with a narrow, sharpe blade is much the fastest. Failing that a good sharp dutch hoe is fine but don't go for one of the cheap, pressed steel ones they blunt and bend too easily. Mine is a draw hoe which has been bent round to make a dutch hoe and keeps really sharp.
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

Noticed a couple of day ago that B&Q have them in. About £25. A very nice one too. I would have brought one but the OH was with me  :(
