Ring Culture
« on: February 25, 2009, 05:01 »
I know there is a thread on here somewhere about growing tomatoes the ring culture way but I can't find it. My question is ;  do I make holes in the plastic liner?. Some books say make holes every 3', others say don't make holes. I'm confused!
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

Hi Kris, My son got hold of some heavy duty plastic that is ideal for the job, but many thanks for the offer.

Very interesting. Just one question - when you line the trench do you just lay the plastic on just the bottom, or up the sides (to make a sort of box) too?

It needs to go up the sides and in one piece, so that it holds water.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

Right, I have dug out a trench 6" deep, lined it with strong plastic,  cut the bottoms out of 6 large pots ready to fill with compost, will pick up the sand/sningle today.
Now, when the tomatoes are planted up and settled in, how much water do I put in the gravel, water laying there all the time, or leave to dry out and then water again? If it's the former I'm a little worried about the roots sitting in water all the time.

Oops, I'm a bit late with this then.

lacewing,

you will be surprised just how much water the sand and gravel can absorb. Just try not to have pools of standing water on the top. Even this doesnt seem to do much harm as long as you leave it to go down before watering again.
Don't forget to give the pots a good initial watering when you first plant the tomatoes, it takes about 3 weeks for the roots to get down into the gravel.
Sets a low standard and fails to achieve it.
