Treated Timber
« on: February 24, 2009, 18:26 »

hello all. This winter I've been building myself some raised beds with timber sides and I know there have been quite a lot of questions on this site about treated timber and whether its safe to grow veg next to them. Therefore while I was at the timber merchants I specificaly asked them about the problem and they assure me that the treatment they used to use was changed 3 years ago and is now perfectly safe. After all that I have lined them on the inside for different reasons so I'm doubly safe.
Just thought you might like to know.

I got timber from a local sawmill. It appeared to have been tanalised. I noticed that the stacks of wood had tags attached stating the timber had been imported. That worried me a bit, because who knows what it was treated with!

A lot of treated wood used to have an arsenic base (to kill chewing pests) but most formulas have since been changed to remove the arsenic. It's still worth taking extra precautions if you're growing food in treated wood.
