Apple, gooseberry and white currant pruning
« on: February 24, 2009, 13:15 »
I was going to do this today but I was not sure what was new growth and what wasn't.

For the apples I guess it is the bit that is greener but for gooseberries how do I know?

Here's a link for doing the currants
 http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/basics/techniques/growfruitandveg_growingcurrants2.shtml

Not sure about gooseberries as mine aren't too old.

Apples need branch suckers removed and some spur pruning, best done with someone who knows proper pruning or with a good visual guide book in hand as you can set a tree back a few years with poor pruning. Perhaps an adept plot neighbour could help.

They are in my garden.  I don't know anyone like that but I might try to get a book from the library.
Last year I pruned my trees which were 1st year in the garden 3rd year overall and for some trees I got a good harvest for that stage - I think.  Apart from D'Arcy Spice which were rubbish - I will have to thin them more this year.

Don't you have to prune gooseberries every year?

Gooseberries & white currants are pruned the same way to keep the centre of the bush open & to create fruiting spurs off the main stems. The new wood tends to be paler in colour on these plants. Either get a good book such as the RHS  Fruit Garden or see if their are any videos/dvd's available (don't know of any offhand but you could Google it).
