FLUFFY WHITE MOULD ON LOO ROLLS!!
« on: February 23, 2009, 14:11 »
Hi....

I have started some seeds in loo rolls and the rolls are now covered with white mould.
Should I discard these seeds and start again?
Is there anything I can do to get rid of the mould?
Is there a preventative cure for the mould?

Thanks
Jazz

I stopped using loo rolls because of this mould, I think Richy's paper pots are a much better option and they don't go mouldy.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

I grew sweetcorn in loo rolls last year and they went mouldy. I still planted them and all came up fine and dandy. I did take the loo roll off the compost before planting out though.

Thanks for all your answers.

I will keep them and see how they turn out. I was thinking of using root trainers but they are so expensive!!

You can spray the mold with cooled chamomile tea (a disinfectant) or a form of damping off spray. It's mostly the glues used in the paper process that are going moldy and shouldn't affect the seedlings.

don't worry about the mould - won't hurt. However, if it's bad, are they a little to damp? I find they need tiny amounts of water and often.

yep, it's over-watering that causes it, well that's what I found. The loo rolls are fine and you plant the whole lot out.  I use them for broad beans, runner beans and sweetpeas and conveniently the roll is the same size as my bulb planter which I use to make a planting hole

Re-use and recycle. You know it makes sense  :)

I used them last year for beans and sweetcorn and I got some REALLY interesting fungi growing on mine  - a bit like those monkeys ears - but the plants all turned out fine, didn't seem to suffer from them. One thing I did find, and posted on here about, was that after I planted them out the bean plants went quite yellow. In the end it was agreed that it was the decomposing cardboard depleting the soil of nitrogen (seemed to make sense) and after a few doses of feed they greened up again. This year I will peel off the excess card before planting.

In my other life in pharmaceutical quality assurance it is well known that cardboard can hide fungal spores.  If you then get the cardboard wet and incubate them at the ideal temperature for fungal spores (25C) they germinate quite happily. They are resiliant little blighters too - they can survive in neat alcohol unlike most of us.

You also find them in plaster but this is normally a black fungus.

Sorry to be a sad techy but I hope it helps.
