Bean Pyramid?
« on: February 23, 2009, 09:13 »
Hi

i am about to start the broad beans in paper pots. but the Q here is can i plant them round one of those cane fold out square things that stands like a pyramid? i got a couple of these for £2 each from a local nursery before Christmas (reduced from £18). will it  maybe make the plants too close at the top or think they will be ok
an if its yes to grow them up this what sort of distance between plants, would this just be the same distance as i would if planting in a row?

cheers
oh no, another pair of leaky wellies!

Do bb's need support?  ??? I grew them once, years ago, and don't remember doing anything special for them, but then again I do have vague memories of poking sticks in somewhere and wrapping string around them. ???
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

As Woodburner said, You don’t need to grow them up a wigwam pyramid they only grow about 2-3 feet, plus you pinch out the growing tip to stop greenfly, you just need to give them a cane for support.

The tallest broad bean plants I've ever grown only got up to about 3ft.  I'd save those pyramids for your runner beans.  they'd look nice.

Some varieties do make it up to chest height, but they're still quite strong, bushy plants.  Best thing to do is to plant them in a block two or three foot deep so you can still pick beans in the middle, bang a post in at each corner, and stretch wire or heavy string around the whole thing to stop the wind blowing them over.

I'm with stripey cat, thats exacty what I do, they really only need support from strong winds if you have an open plot they are pretty robust plants ;)

I'm so glad it's not my memory playing tricks on me after all. ;) :D
