brussel sprouts

hello all, my girlfriend and i have been growing our own veg for 3 years now with reasonable success, but we can't seem to grow sprouts.
we have no problem producing masses of leaves and huge thick stalks but all the sprouts are open and leafy.
we've tried planting them in firm ground to no avail, any ideas???

brussel sprouts is poisonous ain't they?    can never understand the passion for growing them - and the stems is hard to compost
