Purple eyed seedling
« on: February 22, 2009, 17:12 »
Is this a main crop spud? I have googled and although I have found some info nothing about early or main.

I bought some at the potato day yesterday, for some reason I was drawn to the name  :D

I'm guessing no one knows then. I think it's a main but would like confirmation if there is anyone out there who knows  :)

What is the name of it?

I think there's a few different potatos that could match that description.

It's name is purple eyed seedling, honestly!! I have discovered that it was developed in the 1970's at the University of wales but so far i have seen nothing about it being an early or a main. Based on whereabouts it was at the potato day i am leaning towards it being a main

I would think it is a late second early/ early maincrop but that is only a guess.
Visit my website and view my potato blog and videos.

Thanks Iain, I think that is probably right, as far as I recall it was just into the main category, but it could have been at the end of the 2nd earlies. Serves me right for not taking more notice My defnece is lots of varieties and an excited 5 year old  :D or was that an excited Mummy

I've found it listed as a conservation variety here, and some more info here.
No luck finding out how long to maturity though. :(
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

Purple Eyed Seedling is an old variety of main crop potato.
One of its characteristics is that it is very late to mature.
It is an old Welsh potato. White; oval; with purple patches.
The successes and failures of each year keep me motivated for the following year.
