Ash for recycling/using in garden

 
Hi All - lovely day, meant to do garden, but ended up clearing out the shed!! Oh well. Can anyone tell me what's the best thing to do with the ashes from burning paper etc., they must be good for something in the garden- are they potash? Stupid question I know but thought I'd ask!
