I could'nt agree more with all the above posts. I got my second plot by helping an old guy who had worked his plot for 30yrs. but could no longer manage the whole plot on his own. I offered to used half the plot, and 3yrs. later the old guy finally decided to give up. The council then agreed that I could have the whole plot. I use every inch of both plots and all the produce gets used, there is no waste!
We are all aware of the long waiting lists, but the big problem with new tenants is that they don't realise there is  work involved. They pay  rent for a year and after a month or two the plot is abandoned. I blame T.V. programs for showing all the nice aspects of having a plot. They mislead people into thinking all they need to do is scatter a few packets of seeds, go home, come back a month or two later and 'hey presto' fresh home grown veg.  Lovely! the no work plot!
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.
