Black tomatoes
« on: February 19, 2009, 09:24 »
Does anyone know what variety of tomatoes produce purply/black fruit?   They were cherry tomato size if that helps.  I can't seem to find any in the seed catalogues.  Last summer someone gave us some to sample and OH said they tasted great (I don't like tomatoes so can't comment), I would love to have a go at growing some this year.

They are called, strangely enough, Black Cherry.  I grew them last year and they taste great.  They look as if they might poison you though :)  Definately going to grow them again this year.
Cheese makes everything better.

I think this is what you want - Black Cherry
Indeterminate/Cordon.  blackish-purple skinned, cherry tomato with dark red flesh and a sweet and juicy flavour.

There's a bigger one available too. Black Prince, or Russian Prince, something like that. I think T&M have it. There's a heritgae variety with a similar name, but I haven't found a source yet (too many other things to look for ;) ). Thomas Etty, and Suffolk herbs/Kings are worth a look too.

Edit: D'oh I meant Chiltern's seeds. SH/Kings might have some but IMHO Chiltern's is more likely.

I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

DebbieD, I grew Black Cherry last year as I got the seeds free when I bought 3 packets of T&M seeds (I think) & I didn't particularly like them. You are welcome to some if you pm me.

I agree that Black Cherry are over-rated for taste. They were also much later in fruiting than Sungold, my choice for flavour.

Debbie, if your OH has tried them and likes them then have a go.  Some people like marzipan, it make me want to throw up.  We can't all like the same things.
