my canada goose is missing - RETURNED & PIC.
« on: February 17, 2009, 18:50 »
my canada goose is missing, we had him about last autum when he/she appeared in our field (was very tame) and stayed ever since until now :(, he/she got on ok..ish with our other geese and used to follow them around, althou we had to pen him/her in seperately at night as they would pick on her.  Today we were out all day and when we went to put them away at night she was not about.  Have looked everywere we can (they have about an acre of fenced off garden/field to graze), no signs of feathers about and we have 2 dogs who are out all day with them and the other birds, I am hoping that she has layed eggs and is sitting on a nest somewere and will turn up tomorrow (will leave dogs out tonight and hope for the best), Do you know if semi-wild geese lay earlier? any sugestions appreciated

Perhaps it has gone in search of a mate to set up a home with. It is nearly spring.

was hoping that it would choose one of our boys, we have 3 ganders and 4 girls, maybe it's not that simple with a canada goose ???

one other thing i forgot to mention, our garden is split into different levels, and our young peacocks were in a completely different part (higher level) than usual, I was wondering if a dog or something has got in and frightened them.  Will let you know if she turns-up tomorrrow :)  thank you for the suggestions thou

I'd go with Azubah's suggestion. Spring is calling. :)

Hope she keeps paying you visits at least, but I think they like to move around a bit.

Still unsure as to whether mine is male or female
He/she isn't showing any signs of mating  ???

I got him/her at about 2 days old after it was abandoned by Mum that was 24th May last year.
Going off that date it's Mum must have started sitting around 25th April, so egg laying started say around 2/3 weeks before that?
Don't think they have more than one brood a year ???
So I suppose it's a bit early to start the nest side of things so maybe yours has just gone to find a mate?

So hope He/She calls back to see you they are such lovely gentle creatures :)

Sarah :D

if this bird was already wild then no doubt he or she has flown of to find a mate . i have 2 pairs that i watched for daily on my local common land last year they were there for some time as they finally managed to mate an keep 7 babies but the swans never settled which was very very strange . but  before winter hit they were gone considering they are not meant to be in this country anyway they didnt do to bad for themselves . canada geese never stay anywhere for very long at all.

It was possibly using you as a winter stopover between migrations. If you have any flyign over it may have gone off to join them. I'm sure it'll be fine. :)

thank you for all your replies.  I hope she will be ok as she was very tame.  She had never atempted to fly off before or even fly around the garden since she arrived, she just followed the other geese around and used to call out to them if they went out of sight. Horrible when you become attached to them, we even named her Pingu (sounds sad to some people i know, but that is what we are like )

geese like other mirganting birds can get confused very easily and some end up staying in places where they are not meant to be , i am sure shes fine an very happy with a new mate  :tongue2:

Must have wanted to look at the grass on the other side and realised where it was well off.
