maybe a silly question about onions
« on: February 16, 2009, 19:47 »
hello everyone
probably a daft question.....but do you need to do anything to onions before you plant them? e.g soaking them(if so, how long), allowing them to sprout (if so, how), any other pre-planting routines?

never grown onions before, see.............

Ceri

If you're planting onion sets....you don't do anything to them :)

I assume you are referring to sets?never heard of anyone soaking them, they can be started off in modules in a greenhouse, and planted out when about 1-2" tall.

just so I don't make a complete plank of myself.........
by onion sets you mean what looks like very small onions (I don't mean a small species of onion) that are designed to grow larger once planted?

am I thinking correctly that thats how they grow?

I tend to put them in a tray of compost for a couple of weeks. This gives them some roots so that when you plant them in the lotte it prevents the birds from pecking them out.

That sounds like an good idea thinking of doing that myself now, is that the norm for onion sets? as i was going to planting straight into the ground.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Most people stick them straight into the soil, then fight the birds to stop the little sods pulling them all up by the tuft on top.  You can get very elaborate with thorn prunings and black cotton, or you can stick a spare cloche over the row for a week or two (helps keep the sweet spring showers from chilling them too much too).

Can onion sets be planted before the risk of frost has gone? Can I plant now?
Cheers

Yes they are pretty frost hardy - mine have been in all winter with no problems, and even in Jersey the temp has been below minus 3 and the ground temp down to minus 8.  I plant mine straight in the ground but I do put a couple of strings above them for the first few weeks until they are well up.  It seems a lot of bother to plant them indoors first.  They always grow well.

Is there anything to be gained by staggerring the planting of onion sets like we do seeds to make for a longer harvesting season, or do onion sets tend to all start sprouting at the same time whether they are in soil or not?

Stick 'em all in at same time or stagger the planting?

sorry to hijack this thread
I also wanted to know if staggering the planting was worthwhile so I'll be interested to read replies

and also wanted to ask :
Re the sets I planted last autumn, should the onions be visible?, mine are just green stems about 20cm long, wondered if I planted too deep?

Just another question on onions - I put some sets in in early december inside a raised bed that I had cleared of chinese leaves - but as with all things they are now in the wrong place and I want to move them and the raised bed - if I lift the onions carefully do think I can transplant them into another area?

Yes you can, it will set them back a little but they will be fine. I move onions round all the time - they sometimes tut at me when they see me coming with my trowel and an empty bucket.
