Garlic question?
« on: February 15, 2009, 15:26 »
Been up my plot today for the first time in a couple of weeks and found that rabbits have stripped my garlic down to the bulbs, probably because it was the only bit of greenery showing through the recent snow.

Anyone know if they'll grow back?

Hopefully someone has had the mis-fortune of it happening to them and can let me know LOL

I'm guessing they'll continue growing but really haven't got a clue, got some more to go in when the ground dries out a bit and have some in pots at home so all isn't lost if they end up not growing.

It's usually pigeons that will pull out garlic, but rabbits will do a number on them as well. The remaining bulb will keep growing but with the main shoot gone, it's hard to tell how well it will recover. At this late date all you can do is place some strong netting over the area to keep what's left protected and see what happens. Next fall, 'cloche' the area in some wire mesh (smaller holes than chicken wire) to protect from hungry beasties. It's a problem in your area that will not go away.

Thanks Trillium it's definately rabbits they left a few reminders right next to the bulbs! Plus they were nibbled down to the base of the leaves none were actually lifted from the ground.

They've been starving in the snow: we saw zillions of bark-stripped trees and hedges up in the Cotswolds yesterday.

Prehaps there keeping the vampire away those bunny vamps are a nightmare.

I would think the bulbs would need the leaves to grow any more in size.  They might put up a new set let us know what happens
Thanks
Kris

They've grown back  :) :)

Not been up to the plot for a couple of weeks went up to day and they've put on about 4" of leaves and look very healthy.

I remember having this conversation with my mother when my pet guinea-pig ate the thyme plants!  At least with wild rabbits you could snare them and try it out.
