Cut and grow
« on: February 15, 2009, 10:39 »
I have decided not to grow lettuce at the lotte this year,to much hassle going to get it and a lot of wastage.
I have bought some Suttons speedy seeds and was going to sow them in containers, but this seems to use a lot of compost.
Has anyone grown in seed trays, are they deep enough.
Or any other ideas,Im the only one who really likes lettuce so i dont require a lot.

Well it's a bit of a roundabout way to answer your question but here goes.

When my lettuces got mildew i started buying them from Asda...they do 3 different ready to eat lettuces, complete with roots, that have been growing in a 5in pot. I bring home put in pot and water and pick odd leaves, or cut a whole lettuce, as i wanted. You could have a 'production line' of these at home............. would need careful watering in the summer outside tho......but cheaper than loads of compost.

Not sure about seed trays, if not you could try cat litter trays which are about 4" deep or under bed storage boxes (about 6" deep).

My partner has a love for stuffed vine leaves which he gets from the local market in plastic pots about 4.5" deep. I fill these with compost and set one away a week with mixed leaves, it seems to be working and because they are small enough to fit 4 on the kitchen windowsill I can keep it up all year round!

Since last year I only grow my lettuces in containers.  I have made a note from somewhere that Lettuces only need 4" of soil.  But I haven't tried that my containers are the blue mushroom boxes tesco throw out.  They are about 5 and half inches deep, 13 inches insde by 9 inches.  Lucky you I had some indoors that I got yesterday to measure.  I will grow 6 Rom/cos lettuces in that. They grow great.  I use the Cut and come again method.  I also grow 'salad bowl' Lettuce in them and mixed salad/lettuce leaves.

Also grow my radish, spring onion in them.  Might do some strawberries in them this year.

This will be my 3rd year down the plot...
always grown cut an' grow
Will do again this year in basic seed trays..
Still toooo ! much for us, but cheap and plentiful,
grow the odd webbs, coss as space allows.
At the end of the day cut an' grow is enough!
For us, in fact we /I  get a glutt !!!
Bombers -tray ..spot on
Really don't need to plant more.....
Think ! go for it , plant what you need..
allow ... why pay ? 99p to 1.99  a pack at your local
Super market???
Same price as above you get more than enough...
Too much compost IT!!!!

Bye PAH  :)'in

Dunno, is a really sunny windowsill, quite cool there too n I eat them as soon as they are big enough to cut. Perhaps I am just lucky with lettuce.

Think I have the whole house too warm thats why mine go leggy.  Even the unheated box room has its windows in the conservatory so gets warm.
