Whats Wrong with my Chit Potatoes
« on: February 15, 2009, 09:07 »
I started chitting my potatoes on the window sill of my utility room, which catches the sun till approx 12.30. The sprouts are blackish. Is this due to too much direct sun.

I have now covered them with paper 24/7.

???

Like this at first. Roller blind comes up every morning.

To this

Thanks

Looks to me like they're growing how they should :) Mine look like that!!
But don't think direct sun is good for them, but they do need some light .....could'nt you just move them off the window ledge out of the sun? Just an idea..............

The potatoes shown in the images look good nice purple shoots. If the potatoes are going black it must be that there is far to much heat within the room (storage area)

Potatoes should be left to chit in a light, cool but frost free area, where they will chit slowly.

Hope this helps

They look fine to me but I'm no expert.
I only recently got to grips with the reasons behind chitting, (thanks to this site btw ;) ) and going from that, the dormancy is broken (they've started to grow), so now is the time to put them back in the cold, (frost free) until the ground/weather is ok for them to be planted out.

I'm sure someone with more practical experience will be along soon to confirm or put me right. ;)
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

same here, look fine to me, it's when the shoots are white you need to worry and even then chances are they will sort them selves out when put in the ground

I think your tattys look good. You don't want them to romp away too fast so don't let them get too warm.  ;)

If you are planning to plant around end of March (some say Easter Friday but it depends on where you live and the weather and when Easter falls)...then you don't want them to get too leggy.

Best of luck - mind the forsts once planted out.

Those are very nice looking spuds as far as I am concerned. Mine in my conservatory look similar!! Watch out for the chits getting too leggy but that danger aside I don't think you have anything to worry about. Hope you get a good crop.  :D
Keep digging

I read something yesterday, if kept in the dark the chits will be white, which you're not supposed to do as I have learned.  Dark chits are normal.  I was worried first time I did tats, as the only sprouts on them I had seen up till then was when shop bought ones are kept in fridge too long and I got long white sprouts.

Mine look exactly like those too, but will they still be OK in a month's time when it is warm enough to plant them?

Keep them somewhere cool, and they'll be fine!  Do you have a shed that'll keep the frost off them?  Or a porch?
