Red Cabbage
« on: February 13, 2009, 18:22 »

I'm thinking of trying out red cabbage this year, can anyone recommend a good variety sutable for boiling / pickling. ::)

As a kid I couldn't stand it, but I had it in a restaurant the other night and loved it  :D

Are you sure it was red cabbage not chard?
I'm always disappointed at restaurant salad, as I see what I think is red cabbage (which I like) only to find that it's red chard (which I find bitter :tongue2: ). 'Fraid I can't recommend a variety anyway though.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

Woodburner, never thought about Chard

The cabbage I had was warm, slimey & sweet. It was part of the veggies on the side  :)
If I hadn't had a few beers first, I would have asked the waiter

It was a French restaurant, but i think the German's / Austrians  do a similar side dish ?

Woodburner, it was my brothers 50th & he was paying  :D so I was pretty well 'shedded'

it could have been braised red cabbage which is just fab. Lots of varieties and most of them dead hardy and keep their lovely colour when slow cooked for the braised dish.  I'm trying Huzaro this year but have had good results with red Drumhead. You can get small varieties too from Seeds of Italy.  Red cabbage can be eaten raw or lightly cooked with a knob of butter tossed in and a good grinding of black pepper. Definitely worth growing  :)

Sounds like Delia's recipe, I think someone has already posted it somewhere on  the cooking and eating forum (a couple of months ago possibly)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I just LOVE red cabbage...  cold on it's own, finely shredded in salads, pickled and  steamed with main course.
I have grown them for couple of years, successfully... BUT I did buy in plants      Sorry I don't know what variet they were!   This year I will definitely grow from seed if I can.

If you want to try a good Red Cabbage, try Red Fuego available from Johnsons seeds, these are large and extremely compact.
