super quick plants for school kids...
« on: February 10, 2009, 12:45 »
Hi everyone... i am helping out in a class and the teacher wants to plant some seeds with the kids..i know the obvious choice is cress, but does anyone have any other suggestions...i have heard that mustard grows quite quickly too, but was wanting something that the kids might be able to sample.... :)

thanks

Has it got to be planted inside?  if on a nice sunny windowsill, radishes grow quickly, but not everyone likes them, and I bought some cut and come again salad leaves that grow in three weeks, or is that too long?

we used to grow broad beans in glass jam jars trapped against the glass by a tube of blotting paper filled with sawdust kept wet -- shows how seeds such as beans, peas etc split and grow. (Anyone who does not know what blotting paper -- ask your grandmother)
Can also grow bulbs visible in glass jars. Try school project type pages on goggle -- perhaps that will help.
To avoid any disappointment in case all goes wrong - class room too hot or kids forget to water etc -- keep a back up running at home. Cress is faster than mustard. Can also get kids interested in flowers such as coleus which gives a quick result. Sunflowers. Courgtttes produce a plant quickly but need lot of room to get to fruiting stage.
Best of luck -- its a good thing to do

Mint, chives and Parsley grow quickly. Mint and chives also have very strong aromas and can be identified easily.

I still remember growing Sunflowers from seed at junior school.  They take ages to grow to full size but there is always progress to chart.

Sprouting beans like Alfalfa can be grown in jars and are very fast growing.

Pumpkins grow slowly but can be broken down into various stages and the fruits are massive.  Sadly they will need a fair bit of care when the school is closed for summer.  However when the kids get back from summer break the fruit will be set and then you can get on with growing truly massive pumpkins in time for Halloween.

That's never going to fly is it?   ;)

How quick is basil, I'm not sure.  How quick do you need it to be?  They do all sorts of seeds to sprout now for instance I am growing red cabbage to be be eaten as cress size, mind you it is taking a long time to sprout a week so far and just a few.

At junior school we were given bulbs to grow a daffodil then they used to give seeds for candytuft and at the end there was a competition for the best, suppose competition is a dirty word in schools now though.

thanks for the replies eveyone...some great ideas... i will have a chat with the teacher and see what she thinks...she is quite forward thinking so hopefully competition wont be too filthier word...she is planning on borrowing my incy and hatching some chicks for them too...with a view to hopefully keeping some of them in the school...which i think is a fab idea....whether she managed it or not i dont know...i will have to sort a back up home out for them...but more on that on the chook pages...

the topic of the term is growing!!...

my wife is a teacher and every year - it would be "have you got any spare seeds for kids to grow on at school" - when do you need them for ? -- tomorrow -- Oh and a  few pots, some compost, labels etc please. Bagging compost by torchlight is a skill that only some of us master.
My daughter is now a teacher -- phone rings -- "dad" -- you can guess the rest.
Catch em young -- they will never forget the first wonder of seeds coming through

Could also try things like bean sprouts, which grow at awesome speed in the warm indoors. An empty jar witha bit of old tights on the top makes the daily rinsing easy, and you can sproit all kind of seeds, like chickpeas, broccoli etc too.

the beansprouts might be cool...i think the teacher is wanting to get them to grow something they can eat, but it needs to be quite quick...radishes, cress and some beansprouts may just be the way to go....

Rocket in shallow trays will be ready in a couple of weeks (at least to baby leaf stage).  Mine went in a week ago and is starting to show true leaves already; in a warmer room it'd be tearing away.

maybe the kids who are interested could be set a home project ,how about they get a 2ft
window box or a bucket and see what they can grow in it, see if they could grow 3 different things at once set them a date of 6 to 8wks, or see how man potatoes they get in a bucket
some varieties only take around seven wks.
tell them to visit their local allotment with an adult and get some ideas im sure they will be happy to supply them with some seeds if they ask politely.
when im with my 9yr old she's the sensible one
