Alternatives to horse manure
« on: February 08, 2009, 23:20 »
I have access to a friends small holding where I can get a regular supply of fresh cow/sheep dung. I know that I cannot use it in its fresh state (unless I am wrong,,,)

How long would I need to keep it before using it?
Would it be ok to store it on my allotment, and if so how would I store it?
Is it ok to add to it on a regular basis or would it need turning frequently?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated....

Umm.  Not really sure but as nobody else has replied.....

Yes you can use it as an alternative to horse manure BUT you need to know that it doesn't have aminopyralid (or whatever its called) - that herbicide weedkiller - in it.

You are correct, you can't use it fresh.  I think it needs to rot down for a year first.

I would store it in a heap.  You could just mix it into your compost and let it rot down with your compost (although if properly composted, usual garden compost rots down quicker.)

Hope that helps.

Hi Chilli Pot,
You can compost as Green Owl suggests. Alternatively, If you have access to Sheep Dung, you can use that straight off to make a liquid fertilizer. Put some sheep dung in an old pillow case, tie up and dangle into a barrel/bucket of water. It needs to be a sort of weak Tea colour. Wonderful stuff I'm told. ;)
P.S. You can't use the pillow case again I'm afraid. :( :D

Thanks for your replies green owl/bombers. I'll need to clear some space on the lottie to pile up the manure to let it rot down.

I'll certainly try the tip for the sheep manure liquid fertiliser!!! :)
