Help please!
« on: February 03, 2009, 13:25 »
Hi everyone, we got our girls a week ago sunday, one had bubbles round her left eye and a slightly snotty left nostril for three days, just cleared up today, now a second has developed the same bubbles in her left eye, they look like spittle. Has anyone any advice or seen this before? I haven't been able to track it down on the internet.
Sue.

Hi Sue

This could have been brought on by stress but you need to nip it in the bud quickly.

Does the beathing sound rattley?

I think you may need some Tylan from your vet as this is used for respiratory problems.

Have a look here

Hi shiatsusu

It does sound like they have some sort of cold type infection :(

There are a few things it could be from a basic cold to mycoplasma - of which as said before could have been fetched on from the stress of the move.
Have you tried apple cider vineger in their water? This helps ease any congestion? Someone put a thread up about it the other day I think 25ml per liter of water ???

These sorts of problems can be passed around by the bird sneezing so the chances are they might all get it :(

As KimT suggests it might be best to take one of your girls to the vets and ask him to prescribe some antibiotics so that you can treat them all.

Sarah :)

I'm encouraged by the fact that the first one who had it is fine three days later and my maran who has it now isn't off her food and is only in the house marginally more frequently than the others. I washed the eye with chamomile tea and checked her over- she isn't rattling and there is no unusual smell. They already have acv in their water at weekends but perhaps in this cold snap I should put some in too? Thanks for the advice - I think I will phone the vet because it does look as if it's going through all of them. Poor chooks, first moving home then snow and -5 temps  :(

Update- took Renny to the vet this morning as she was looking very sorry for herself indeed and she's on anti b's now so hopefully it'll clear up soon and the others won't come down with it, especially as we only have one layer and I don't want to have to ignore her delicious eggs for a fortnight!
Thanks for the advice ladies, this site is so useful and reassuring too!
