Potato Onion Seeds
« on: February 02, 2009, 09:43 »
Does anyone know a supplier for these please. I've just read about them and want to try them but have come up empty handed on the internet looking for a supplier.

Thank you for any replies  :)

I was reading the Helligan Vegetable Bible (snowed in today!) and they are in there. They split like a shallot but develop underground and are described as mild and unusually sweet. I've tried all the stockists listed in the back of the book but no joy and a search on the internet only throws up American sites  :(

I looked at their web site but it is all very geared to the ticket sales side. There is a little bit about their plant sales area but no plant list. In the book, they say they save their own seed, but it's just finding the original source  ::)

Maybe email them and ask where you can get some?

are these a type of shallot or evergreen chive? are these what you are looking for ?

have some recollection of them being harmful to dogs - but i am getting closer to the land of the confused so take that with a pinch of salt.

http://www.heliganshop.com/

They aren't listed, but you might be able to call the shop and ask.

Info on the Potato Onion - sounds interesting - if you find a supplier then do post it! I'll start looking as well.

Is this the 'Walking Onion'? Also known as Tree Onion or.... Egyptian Onion, Allium cepa?

If so, I have some that I haven't had a chance to plant - a very kind person (on here, I think) let me have them and I am afraid my plot is not yet ready... they should be ok though - I could let you have a few to try..?

I should stress that these are bulbs, not seeds.

I'd be very interested to try the walking onion, I was after some from real seeds but they were out of stock :(

No - it's the opposite of the walking onion it multiplies underground.

I got some Egyptian Walking Onions from Canada off ebay...and will have some to swap later in the year as they've all sprouted [they went in the ground in august].

I'm sure the EWO's will be just as fun if not more. I can't wait for mine to shoot up and start strutting around the place.
