Hi ...as I understand Scallions are an American type of onion,
a cross between Spring onions and Leeks.
Not as thin as S/onions and not as fat as leeks.
The geen part being used in place of chives, the white as in salads.
Other than that where to purchace them  from, sorry nay sure!!!!

Having an Irish better half I am sure that scallions is the Irish name for spring onions ::)

No Irish comments please! (she might read this )

Sounds like welsh onions to me

Welsh Onions

UK Garden Centre - Information about Welsh Onions

The flavour of onion is required for all sorts of dishes, and we rely on the varieties  or on chives. There are, however, other types of onion which can be used but have never become popular. Welsh onion (Japanese bunching onion) is a perennial producing clumps of hollow leaves up to 2ft (60cm) tall – an excellent evergreen substitute for spring onions. A similar but smaller plant raised from bulbs rather than seeds is the everlasting or everready onion.
Sow welsh onion seed in March in drills ½in (1cm) deep and 1ft (30cm) apart. Thin the seedlings to 9in (23cm) spacings and remove leaves as required. The clumps will increase in size each year but quality deteriorates – lift, divide and replant every 3 years.
Use the leaves of the welsh onion as a substitute for spring onions or chives.

Jekk'a Herb Farm sell the seeds on line

Hope this helps

http://homecooking.about.com/od/cookingfaqs/f/faqscallions.htm

This is the answer I have now found'
It is a word I know from some 50 plus years back.
( my Grandad talking about them)
One which I came across again a few months, when one of
the elders on our site mentioned  welsh scallions -bunching onions,
which he has now planted.
Whether or not the word is Welsh or  Irish of origion.
I realy don't know,
Hope this helps in some way...Bye PAH

That picture shows them pulled up by the roots, like normal spring onions, not the cut and come again thing the OP described.

In Iran they harvest leeks like that for fine greens, but I never heard of it done for onions. Scallions, I always understood to be bunching onions, which are treated in much the same way as shallots. Also scallions are easy to find with google so I'm not at all sure what you are trying to find.  ???  :(
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

They used to be on market stalls. When bulb onion crops were thinned the thinnings were sold as scallions - effectively spring onions.

Yes, scallions is what some people call spring onions.......but Chooknewbie says that his grandad never replanted them...so ordinary spring or early pulled common onions wouldn't fit the bill. IMO must have been some kind of 'perpetual' onion which is why i suggested the welsh ones.
