asparagus
« on: January 30, 2009, 20:48 »
hello everyone

has anyone grown asparagus in big pots? is there any reason why it can't be done?
i bought some crowns but on reading the blurb it will be 2 years before i can harvest anything and don't really want to take up my limited veggie plot space with something i cant eat this year!
So if I can plant them in big pots and "forget" about them for a couple of years that would be a better solution space wise.
Any thoughts on this?

Also, how about growing raspberries in pots?anyone done it?

 :)

I have never tried either but my gut instinct is that both would be far better off in the ground.
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Raspberries in pots aren't a good idea. Their roots are runners, and in a pot, the roots would circle and soon choke itself. Besides which, they're thirsty and pots dry out too quickly unless you plan very regular thorough waterings for them.
Same with asparagus. Its roots don't circle but they do get very large and unless the pot is really large, the plant will suffer to the point that it will constantly attract pests. For perhaps a year asparagus will be okay in a large pot but not much longer. And again, a pot would dry out too quickly unless very large.
There's nothing to say you can't try, but in the end you'll find it a waste of money and time to keep these 2 in pots.

Asparagus is a big no... mature rooted plants can go down about 4 feet.... raspberries... well, probably not ideal but my autumn fruiting did very well this year in a big pot so I'd say give it a try...
