so bland then lorna  good at bulking up stews is that all they are used for or do people eat them as an ordinary veg?

I found you can barely tell the difference between  turnips and spuds in dishes like stews and used a potato substitutes in curries.

They're good boiled and mashed in with the spuds. They add something extra. Don't take long to cook though.

Dave I wouldn't call them bland... I had always had them as a side veg, steamed, boiled or roast but recently I made them the main feature of a soup (we need that slurp emoticon again :D). It was yummy! :)

Turnips are easy to grow...honest.

Keep them with other brassicas and successionally sow as they come at once.

I use them to fill in gaps as they're quick growers.

Oasis is a good one and is very juicy almost like melon and really adds a difference to salads.

Main pest to begin with is flea beetle(apart from slugs) Sow under cover with fleece for example until they're big enough to defend for themselves.

Harvest when between golf and tennis ball size for the best roots.
Top tip for camping....don't go.

Not if you've got club root. >:(
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

No definitely not bland.  I grew main crops - and they were easy (without club root!)- and have really got to like them.  Not an immediate 'oh yes' - mashing them on their own was a bit dull and putting them in a casserole which had red wine in the sauce turned them rather barbara cartland pink, but then I discovered roasting them mixed with parsnip.     The two flavours really do things for each other ....  I think that they need a cooking method that does not introduce more water - hence roasting frying and at a push steaming.
