Scaley leg - advice please
« on: January 27, 2009, 13:42 »

I'm just tackling a minor case of scaley leg in my two wyandotte hens and wonder if you would normally expect to see some swelling associated with it?  They are both perching on their nesting boxes not on the perch (which is only 18" high) presumably because they have sore leggies...

I'm using the surgical spirit scrub with a toothbrush... is applying a coating of vaseline better in anyone's experience?  If so I'll get some on the way home.

Advice appreciated as ever...

hi, they can swell a bit. i wouldnt be scrubbing them tho, can kift the scales off.

dip in the durgical spirit and slather with vaseline. repeat in a few days then let them be. pulling their scales off will be very sore and could get infected.

their legs may not look pretty until the next moult.

im sure some more advice will be along soon

Hi Sarah

Ive been reading through some other threads and found this

http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=22062.0

Mentions something called Benzyl Benzoate - might be worth trying?

I use Benzyl Benzoate and it works a treat. I apply it with a small paint brush once a week for two weeks and the third week I apply Vaseline.

You can buy this from your local chemist and it's used for scabies!

Hi Sarah, it may well be that the skin on the legs has become damaged, thus the swelling- I would stop the surgical spirit (IMO may be exacerbaing any irritation) and just smear legs in vaseline which will be more soothing -maybe something with T-tree oil in. To get rid of the mites you could try a couple of drops of frontline on the skin of the bird.
