Lost a claw?
« on: January 26, 2009, 14:28 »
I noticed one of my hens feet bleeding. On inspection it looks as though she has lost a claw.  The hard nail part has come away and left a short soft bit exposed and bleeding.  I think this is the living part of the nail/claw.  What has happened here? What should I do about it.  Has any one ever heard of such a thing? Is it a symptom of some other problem or just a nasty accident?  I washed it in clean water and put her in a nest box, but she did not want to rest.  She is walking with a limp.

Hi

It sounds like she's caught it on something :(

Has it stopped bleeding?
A squirt of purple spray wouldn't go a miss (you can get it from most horsey - feed suppliers)

Best thing I can suggest :)

Keep it as clean as possible to prevent any infection getting in keep a close eye on her :)

Hi, My dog tore a nail off last Summer and left the quick exposed.  He had a sedative before the vet removed the quick and had a plastered leg for a week.  The nail has grown back fine.
Sounds like your hen haas exposed the quick and we all know how painful that can be!!  Ouch.

She will be fine but just a little sore for a few days.

If you run into the problem again and there is excessive bleeding just use flour or table sugar as blood stop powder. Works very well and sugar is said to have antiseptic properties to it.

Thanks for advice.  She did stop bleeding.  She seems happy enough, still scrapping for scraps, though she does have a limp for now.  I think I may clip her other claws just in case.  She was rescued in october and I left her claws alone.
