I agree....my patch is very clay based and still too sodden...i have my spuds chitting ( very slowly i might asdd? not sure what im doing wrong but one lot has little new shoots but im talking tiny the other just the first sigs of shoots?) they are in the cold lean too double garage by a double window so they are getting light?...butt been there for weeks and weeks now ?
I reckon the end of the month is most likely for anything going in the ground where i am in the south / kent .

Many thanks all for the advice.

I'll wait until the weather gets warmer and the soil drier before planting my spuds, and I gently cover them with compost as recommended.

sounds like you're doing just the right thing with your spuds Dan, some varieties take longer to get going than others, for example Pink Fir Apple tubers are likely to still be fast asleep at this stage of the game.  As long as the chitty shoots are a nice dark greeny or greeny/purple colour they're okay.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.
