Elsanta Strawberry plants
« on: January 24, 2009, 11:09 »
I bought 3 of these from Wilkos  this morn.

What do I do now please?

Should I pot them up and put them in the greenhouse or do I have to keep them inside?

Do I feed them?

Will they only fruit next year?

Thanks xx

Outside, in pots make sure the crown, thats were the leaves will come from is just above soil level.
You can feed them later in the year, use a tomato feed to help with any fruit that may grow.  :D

Mine are already small seedlings, about 6-8inchs long with 2 leaves on, quite thick stemmed too.  Where do I take the soil up too?

What your looking for is the point from where those leaves are coming from, it should be just one central point, this is what's called the crown, this must be just on the surface of the soil to prevent rotting.

Thank you!

One last question... does it have to be one of them special Strawberry pots, or can I put it on the bottom (or top) of my baskets?

Anything that will hold a growing medium will do, but if their just babies I'd be potting into 3" pots for now. Till they get bigger. :)

click on next page at bottom of this link and it gives an illustration of how to plant with attention to the crown.

And how would I fit something that is 6-8inches into a 3inch pot? :tongue2:
