If you have about 6 or so seed in your packet but want more plants, don't pinch out the first side shoots immediately. Let them get a couple of pairs of leaves then cut them and put them in wet vermiculite and a couple of weeks later you will have your extra plants.
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Last year when i planted my toms in the g/h i dropped 1 and smashed it to pieces. I cut the top bit which was still ok and just poked it into g/h soil and that rooted.  it actually turned out the strongest plant by the end of the season.

I always miss side shoots. I pop 'em in a pot of compost and stick them in the plot a few weeks later for the blight to feast on later!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I have read somewhere that you can do that pushrod.  I'm sure the tomato experts will confirm it too.  Should post this on the frugal living thread.

even simpler and quicker - let the sideshoot get about 3 inches long - pinch out and pop in a jar of water - in about 2 weeks loadsa shoots will be forming then pot em up and grow on!

How's that simpler than my method of sticking them straight in the pot?
