Brambles - roots mainly
« on: January 22, 2009, 15:55 »
Hello,

We finally started!! Anyway, we have a new plot, never been grown on before but it was VERY overgrown with brambles and god knows what else, the council cleared it and we have been left to do the rest.

On Saturday we went down and my other half cleared all around the water trough - communal one but we have to keep it looking spic.

I attempted to dig up the roots and bases of what i think once were brambles, thorny twigs, roots that go on down to Oz, that kind of thing!

3 questions:

1. I cant get all of the roots out, do brambles re-grow?
2. Should we rotavator it to get down deeper and filter out as much of the roots as we can?
3. Should we just dig (maybe double, oh god no) and see what we can do?

There were loads of roots all over, bit worrying really, going back down again this weekend, so any advice greatly received!

I'm a vegetable virgin! All advice offered very welcome!!

Double digging isn't as hard as it sounds, and is really good preparation. Getting the roots out to that depth will stop regrowth from all but the very thickest roots, and even if they make it out they will be spindly and easily dealt with.
I don't think you can rotivate through bramble roots, but I'm not a fan so wouldn't really know.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

A lot of people on here have found an Azada just the tool for the job.

Bring back Agent Orange !

I spent a whole day last month trying to get rid of some brambles that had grown amongst my Goosegog bushes.

I was cut to bl@@dy ribbons and pricked to death.

I've tried everything, pulling them up, spot weedkilling with glyphosate, but they just keep coming back.

I can't dig them up 'cos I'll wreck the Gooseberrys roots.

They've got to be the most evil plant out there.

If I were in your position I'd nuke them with some  perennial weed killer if you don't have any qualms about using it ,but the trouble is they won't have any leaves at the moment for it to work I suppose.

So you could dig out as many roots as poss and then if you get any regrowth you could spot weedkill them and try to controll them that way ?

It is a pain. :?
