simple pot question )
« on: January 22, 2009, 12:21 »
Im planning on growing 30 metres of potatoes (3 rows of 10m) and im not to sure how many sets i will need.

Can anyone advise me please?
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

You do the math.

I plant earlies 12" apart
Second earlies 15" apart
Maincrop 18" apart.

Others may vary!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

And you get roughly 10-11 seed pots to the kilo, this will vary by variety but's a good enough benchmark in my experience. If your a few short you can divide bigger tubers.

Just make sure they all have eyes - they like to see where they're growing

Just looking at my main crop instructions on packet (maris) and it says plant them 8" apart

Im sure the seller will advise on the close side to sell more. I see DD says 18".

Today im chitting and counting to work out if ive got enough for my 10m rows bit of another mine field or should i say potatoe field  :)

So whats everbodys own expert idea of the distance apart?

my pack says 15" but if DD says 18" then 18" it is, do you think maybe it was a printing error and it should have said 18"?

DD.'s spot on as usual with his spacings, tho' I do mine 15" for all earlies and 18" for maincrop, we all have our own ideas/ways.

Follow DD.'s advice and you won't go far wrong .... top man  ;)

But planting that close 8" ! I would have thought would result in lower crop return.
