Chitting in a cold frame
« on: January 21, 2009, 17:39 »
I know, another potato thread   Sorry!

I did ask this in an earlier thread but it seems to have been missed. Could you let me have your opinions regarding chitting in a cold frame.

I dont have a greenhouse, the shed would be to dark and I have no room (and no cold window cills) in the house. My OH doesn't do cold!

Would it work? or is there to much risk of frost damage?

Many thanks for any replies.

Richard

I think it should be OK as long as you ventilate it so It doesn't get boiling hot if and when the sun ever comes out.

If you're worried about frost just bring them inside if it's forecast for the night or cover them with a load of fleece. :)

It would have to be a load of fleece. My greenhouse gets frosts in that, so personally I wouldn't tempt them in my coldframe

Thanks for the advice vegmandan and sadgit.

Think I will be giving it a go on the basis that I have little real choice. Will just have to keep a close eye on the weather forecast and try not to forget about them when I get in from work

I'd give it a go in the cold frame (but in the shade not full sun) and move them into the shed ovenight if frost if forecast !
