Alternative for Compost Bins...

I read that you can use the large delivery bags that builders have sand etc delivered in, as they are tough and 'breathable'.

So I went on Ebay and I've bought 10 Strong Woven Polypropylene Rubble Bags for less than £6. I plan to use 6 or 8 of them for compost bins, just covering them with black plastic. They are woven so air can pass through them.

Plus, when the compost is ready, it will be in its own bag to be moved / used wherever on the plot!  :D

Nice one Gaz.

I am coming round to the idea of composting. Never saw the point before but i might give it a go. Cheers

Oh you gotta give it a go Mr P, last year I had a 6sq ft bin we made from paving blocks.  filled it with all the kitchen veg waste, incl egg shells, grass cuttings, chicken and goat poo. all layered reasonably well, and covered wiht a 4" layer of soil.  Just after Chirstmas I dug out the lovelist soil ever.  Last autumn I planted my courgettes in it.  They were lovely too!!!

Great idea, but be pepared to buy more, I think they don't last too long on floor and damp :(  They defiantly don't after you've used them for leaf mould collecting or compo moving   but look around any houses that are being built there're always a few to be gleened here
Someone take the spanners away from me!

Its the UV that knackers them.  Some are UV treated but all will last longer if you keep them out of direct sun.

How do the worms get in? Do you plan to cut some holes in the bottom?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I can't remember the details did not someone on this site put a link to a website showing use of these type of bags for composting? - i seem to think I've seen something about it recently including all sort of instructions about how full to make the bags etc.

Worms can get in (and out) of anything.  Composting worms include a species called Night Crawlers which are very well named.   I've found them 6ft up the side of a wooden shed.
