Biodynamic planting and sowing
« on: January 20, 2009, 15:27 »
Has anyone got any more information on this topic?

I am awaiting delivery of a 2009 calendar showing the various phases and what to plant when, but has anyone had any hands on experience?

Even better has anyone had any results from using it?
Enjoying the traditional ways and values of life.

It's important with biodynamic gardening to ensure you follow the phases of the moon and only ever plant in the nude remembering never to turn widdershins when the moon is waning and Mercury is conjunct Uranus.

I'd best come clean, I can't see any rational behind biodynamics that makes sense to me so I haven't spent much time looking at it. However, many people say it works for them.

Hi Auntie, John et al,

In response to "where have you been since August":-

Well in May we had number three child arrive - Charles William Ian, and he has taken more than a bit of time.

I have also just published a local history book which went on sale in November (and is doing very well now - thanks to a big peice on it in the local paper)

I have been around on the site, but as a watcher only.

The allotments last year were not as good as previous years and at present one is completely covered in tarps and the other has a couple of load of manure on it.

The greenhouse is clear and ready for the longer days of March/April when the real work can resume.

I did purchase a copy of John's excellent book in December and we have been reading it, inwardly digesting the info and of coarse planning this years onslaught.

We also changed internet providers - not recommended - to try to save money.  The net result (LOL) was we have had a very interrupted service of late.  But that is now being resolved.

Nice to know I have been missed and it is good to be back amongst friends.

And back to the subject of this thread - Biodynamic planting has been used by a couple on our plot for ages in conjuction with organic growing and the results speak for themselves at the competition bench.  Their Kale this year has to be nearly 4 foot high and as bushy. Thats why I am planning on trying it in conjuction with our normal planting - you have to try new things each year.

Last year was the year of the Munty's bean pole plan. Which worked successfully until we had some very unexpected high winds which blew the whole thing into the next county!

I have a theory that it works not because of anything to do with the moon or stars or whatever, but simply because if you have only one day in the month to sow stuff you will actually sow it on that day whereas others are still waiting (hoping lol) for a warm day to come along, the ground to dry out/warm up etc., and as we all know, nothing grows in a paper bag. (Well maybe beans if the bag gets wet :tongue2: ;) )
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

It's not just about the moon and its phases in relation to when to sow or plant but from what I know of Biodynamics it's more than just a way of growing crops - it's a way of living too.  Each farm/garden has to become self sufficient in compost but you apparently need to buy specific preparations for making the compost !

You can find out much more than any of us know about it from their web site:

Hardly self sufficient if youhave to buy stuff.

I bet I know what's in it though, I'll see if I can dig out the link. ;)
