i am looking to grow broad beans. i want a very tall variety ?(5/6 ft) so that i can utilise space. can any one recommend a variety and where i can buy them? i think its a heirloom victorian variety.

I have to admit, I wasn't aware that they grew that tall. The tallest beans i've grown are aqualdulce claudia which get to about 4 feet. I tend to pinch the tops out when the first beans set, but always get more than enough beans off them.

i might be wrong and they don't get that tall. i think i read that there is an old victorian variety that gets that tall? does any one know?

Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

are saying Giant Exhibition Longpod get to 90cm thats about 36in so 3ft. am i right?

Why not grow runners or climbing french, they'll hit 6 foot.

well, runners and french are more for the fleshy pods than beans themselves.

Mine were about 5-6 feet last summer... yield was something fantsastic... maybe I was late pinching out the growing tips, but I don't think I was.

...shame, I later lost anything I stored after the freezer went belly up!


Joe on Gdner's World had Cobra growing last year and they looked really good (tall) with a decent yield.   On my list for this year.
